Both Christmas and New Year’s Day have fallen on a Tuesday this year, which is the usual time this article appears in the Mirror.  It is usual at this time of year to look back at the previous year’s events, both big and small, and try to make sense of them.  I think everyone would agree that the past year went by very quickly and had a lot of ups and downs.

From a practice standpoint we had a great year.  From the weather standpoint locally, things stunk, lots of rain and little sun.  It is too soon to know about the winter, but it doesn’t seem to be starting off in the right direction. What can I say about the political climate?  President Trump certainly has kept things lively.  The financial markets, which were doing well early in the year, seem to be affected with hiccups creating some uncertainty. Other social issues, such as global warming, immigration, and health care, continue to cause a lot of arguments. But if you think this year has been unique, don’t.  I grew up in the late 50’s and early 60’s when racial tension, Vietnam, and inflation were some of the main topics.

Next year will bring a new set of issues to keep us awake at night. Hopefully, the best part for all of us will be that we will be here with our blood flowing in our veins, grumbling over things big and small, and looking forward to all that 2019 has to offer.
